A Second Chance

It’s a Wonderful Life is one of the world’s most well-loved and watched Christmas movies of all time. The Christmas theme alone is enough to make it a family tradition, but it’s the theme of second chances that really makes this movie stand out from the rest.

Not many of us are fortunate enough to get such a cinematic second chance; however, Rhonda Patrick is one of those lucky people.

She has three children, two that are adults and one that is less than 10 years old. But her story actually starts back decades earlier, when she first entered the workforce.

“I worked in Management Information Systems at Sprint for 25 years,” Rhonda said. “But when the company started laying people off, I knew I had to make a change.”

Her youngest daughter, Simone, also catalyzed that career change. Born with Down Syndrome, Simone was a beautiful surprise to come to Rhonda’s life.

“It’s been hard, but so worth it. She is my joy and my heart,” Rhonda said.

In order to give back to the health community that had done so much for her and Simone, Rhonda decided to become a Community Health Worker. Rhonda later graduated from the University of North Texas with a degree in Sociology.

After researching community volunteer opportunities online, Rhonda stumbled upon a job position at Outreach Health Services, a home care agency headquartered in Richardson, Texas. Rhonda says that her job at Outreach enables her to do more in her community than she ever could have done as a social worker.

“I have been at Outreach for a year now,” Rhonda said. “I have been so blessed to be able to take better care of my family because of the compassionate supervisors I work for and the job flexibility that Outreach allows.”

In her spare time, Rhonda writes for her blog, S.I.M.O.N.E., that is named after her daughter Simone. The acronym stands for “Sharing Individual Milestones ONE day at a time.”

Rhonda is also active in the Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas, the ARC of North Texas, and DFW Community Health Workers Association among many others.
